Abstract no.7 by Lis Lauendorf is a one of a kind original oil painting, 74 by 78 centimetres, and red is the first thing it gives you. Not a red shape on a pale ground. Red from one edge of the canvas to the other, with everything else laid on top of it.
Abstract no.7 by Lis Lauendorf is an original abstract oil painting, created by hand from scratch and measuring 74 by 78 centimetres. It is a unique work with no prints and no editions, exclusive to NOKUKO and sold with a certificate of authenticity. Only the original is sold, and shipping is arranged directly with NOKUKO.
Red Is the Ground, Not the Accent
In Abstract no.7, red is not one colour among several. It is the ground the whole painting stands on. Measured across the photograph of the canvas, red covers roughly seven tenths of the surface, and in the outer margin almost all of it. Every corner is left as plain red.
The other colours arrive on top. Pink, blue and black gather in a loose, broken ring that sits inside the margin, and at the centre of the canvas sits a block of orange, crossed by a dark line and a stroke of brown, with a flash of white beneath it. Blue is the cool note in a painting made, in the product's own words, in warm colours, and it stays out in the ring. The centre is kept for orange.
The effect is that the painting does not wait for you to come closer. Hung on a wall, it reads first as a single field of colour, and only then as the marks inside it.

Paint You Can See Standing Off the Canvas
Abstract no.7 is painted thickly, and the surface has relief. The blue and the pink are laid on in broad, flat strokes that stand up from the canvas, with ridges along their edges that catch the light. Near the left edge the red is thinner, and the marks of the brush run straight down the canvas.
This is the part of an original that a photograph flattens. On a screen, the painting is colour. In a room, it is colour with a surface, and that surface changes as the light moves across it through the day. The orange block at the centre is the clearest example: its paint is pushed into ridges you could follow with a fingertip.

An Original at the Scale of a Large Print
At 74 by 78 centimetres, Abstract no.7 is smaller in area than a 70 by 100 centimetre print, a size many NOKUKO prints come in. It is very slightly taller than it is wide, so it reads as almost square without quite being one.
That scale matters for where it can live. It does not need a wall to itself. It can hang above a sideboard, at the end of a corridor or in a group with other pieces, places where an original canvas is rarely an option. It is also smaller than the two Lauendorf canvases this blog has written about before. Abstract no.5 by Lis Lauendorf is a 100 by 100 centimetre square that makes its case with a fine black line moving over still colour. Abstract no.7 makes its case with the colour itself.
Because it is an original canvas rather than a print, shipping is not a standard rate. The best option and price are agreed directly between you and NOKUKO.
Most rooms are built from quiet colours, with one or two loud things placed among them. Abstract no.7 would be one of those loud things, and it would not apologise for it.
Rooms tend to rearrange themselves around a painting like this. The cushions, the books, the one lamp that was always slightly too orange: suddenly they all have somewhere to belong.
