Prominent Peacock by Alantherock is a hand-drawn peacock set against a wall of photographed Lisbon tiles. Look once and you see a proud bird. Look again and you notice the bird has almost no colour of its own. Everything bright in the picture is either behind it, or has already left it.

Prominent Peacock is an art print by Alan Pedersen, known as Alantherock. It layers a hand-drawn peacock and acrylic-painted feathers over photographs of Azulejos tiles taken in Lisbon, Portugal. The print comes in three editions, Day, Night and Dream, and three sizes, produced on Fine Art Freja paper at 265g.

A Peacock Drawn Over the Tiles of Lisbon

The background of Prominent Peacock is made from real Azulejos, the glazed ceramic tiles that cover walls, stairwells and shopfronts across Lisbon. Alan travelled there with a camera and photographed them, then worked on each tile in editing to bring its original colour back up to strength.

The result is a grid of dozens of different patterns, none of them repeating. Blue and white geometry sits beside a yellow chequerboard. Green florals meet terracotta scrollwork. Near the top, inside one small tile, there is a red heart. It is the kind of detail you only find on the second or third viewing, which is rather the point of a wall like this.

The peacock itself is drawn, not painted. It is a single continuous line, held in profile with its crest raised, and the body and tail are filled with curls, loops and spirals packed so tightly that they read as plumage from across a room and as pure drawing up close. The tail sweeps down and to the left like a wave breaking.

Day, Night and Dream: Three Ways to See the Same Bird

Prominent Peacock comes in three editions, and each one changes which part of the picture carries the colour. The drawing never moves. Only the light does.

Day holds the tiles at their full daylight strength, all the blues and yellows and greens of a Lisbon afternoon, with the peacock in deep navy and its loose feathers in navy and green. Night takes the same wall into blue and violet, turns the bird turquoise, and lets the fallen feathers glow magenta. Dream does something quieter and stranger: the tiles fall away to grey, and the colour transfers to the bird, which stands in olive and gold with feathers of brown and purple around it.

The Dream edition came from Alan's Instagram community. Colours suggested in comments and feedback found their way into the piece, which makes it the one edition the audience helped decide.

The Feathers That Have Already Left

The loose feathers drifting across the tiles are painted rather than drawn, and they are the only part of the work made in solid acrylic. That difference matters. The bird is line, and the feathers it has lost are paint. They carry the weight of the brush, and they carry the colour.

Some of them rise. Some fall. Some hang in the space between the two, going neither up nor down. Alan has said that lost feathers keep their purpose, spreading joy somewhere else, and he leaves the rest of the story deliberately untold. Why is one feather grand and another delicate. Where do they go once they leave. The work does not answer.
