Path of Autumn Trees by Alantherock: A Hall Made of Trees

Path of Autumn Trees by Alantherock is a landscape photography print of a long avenue of trees in a Copenhagen cemetery, photographed by Alan Pedersen at the very start of autumn. An avenue that is built like a hall

The photograph reads as architecture because the trees stand the way columns do. They are planted in two straight rows at an even spacing, and from where the camera stands every trunk lines up behind the one before it, smaller each time, until the rows almost meet. Overhead the branches cross and knit into a roof of leaves, with almost no sky showing through.

The camera is held low, close to the ground, so the path fills the bottom of the picture and the rows rise out of it on either side. That low position is what turns an avenue into a room. The product description calls the trees a frame for the scene, and that is exactly how they work: everything in the picture, the trunks, the canopy and the edges of the path, leans in towards a brick doorway at the far end.

The light gathers at the far end

The brightest part of the picture is not the foreground but the far end of the avenue, just above the door. Along both edges the leaves are a deep, shaded green. Towards the centre the canopy turns lighter and more yellow, and just above the doorway it is roughly twice as light as it is at the sides. The eye follows that light down the aisle without being asked.

That is also where the season shows. This is autumn at its very beginning: the trees are still in full leaf, a scatter of yellow has appeared in the crowns near the end of the path, and the first fallen leaves lie on the path in the foreground. Most of the green has not turned. It is the moment the year changes direction, caught before it becomes obvious.

It is not the only Copenhagen cemetery avenue Alan has photographed. Path of Spring, one of the two editions of Sakura by Alantherock, looks down a cherry avenue at Bispebjerg Cemetery in blossom. Path of Autumn Trees is the same kind of looking at the other end of the year, with more shade and a longer view. The smaller size sits comfortably above a desk, in a hallway or beside a door. A2 is the size for a sideboard, a sofa wall or a long stretch of plaster in a living room. Either way, it is a picture that works best somewhere you face often, because it is built to be looked into rather than glanced at.

Path of Autumn Trees is a quiet photograph. There are no people in it and almost no sky, and the only sign of change is the few leaves already down. What it gives a room instead is depth: a long, straight view that a wall does not usually have.
